Etsy makes money by charging fees to its users. The main way it generates revenue is by taking a commission on each sale made through its platform. The commission is typically a percentage of the sale price, usually around 5% to 6%. Additionally, Etsy charges a listing fee of $0.20 for each item listed for sale on the site.
Additional Way Etsy Generates Revenue
Etsy also generates revenue through additional services such as:
- Promoted Listing: allows the seller to promote specific listings to a larger audience and is charged on a pay-per-click basis.
- Offsite Ads: allows the seller to promote their products on other websites and is charged on a pay-per-click basis.
- Shipping Labels: allow the seller to purchase shipping labels directly through Etsy at discounted rates.
- Direct Checkout: enables sellers to accept payments directly through Etsy instead of through PayPal or other payment processors.
- Pattern by Etsy: allows sellers to create and sell custom websites and web domains.
- Etsy also generates revenue through partnerships and collaborations with other companies, as well as through interest earned on the funds held in its payment system.
By charging fees for its services, Etsy is able to operate and maintain its platform, pay its employees, and generate profits for its shareholders.
