The Business Landscape is Rapidly Changing, So Adapt Quickly

A short time ago, I had the great privilege of meeting and having a conversation with a veteran advertising executive. She painted an amazing picture, and honestly, a bit frightening depiction and description of how rapidly the world of both advertising and business, in general, has changed over the past 30 years.

At one point in our conversation, she began to talk about her 30-year career in advertising. She gave both an eye-opening and very thought-provoking explanation of how the business landscape has dramatically changed throughout her 30-year career.

Below I outline the most thought-provoking points and the overall jif of what she said…

In 1966, life was simpler, or so it seemed. No mobile phones, no emails, and videos were a distant dream. ‘Social’ meant stepping outside, and the internet was synonymous with encyclopedias. Fast forward to today, and the world has transformed into a digital playground, a realm of possibilities that would have seemed unimaginable back then.

The Evolution of Work: From Magazine Dilemmas to Data Scientists

In the early days of my career at the advertising agency, a ‘hard decision’ was choosing between a full-page ad in Cleo or Cosmopolitan—a choice that kept me up at night. Cut to 25 years later, and the landscape has shifted dramatically. Media scheduling discussions now involve data scientists, with phrases like “A/B testing using multivariate vector points as mutable factors for sub-segment n-2, utilizing regression coefficients.” It might sound like a foreign language, but that’s the complexity of today’s media-buying discussions.

Toys Then and Now: From Pong to Programmable Drones

Even children’s toys have undergone a revolution. My son’s 11th birthday present was a drone helicopter for $50. Five years ago, it would have cost $700, and eight years ago, it didn’t even exist. The gyro that makes it function cost NASA engineers $100 million to invent, and now you need to be a computer programmer to operate it. Contrast this with my own childhood, where we were thrilled with Pong, considering it the epitome of technical sophistication.

The Need for Speed: From Months to Minutes

The pace of change is unprecedented. What once took a team of creative professionals three months to produce, a TV commercial, can now be crafted by a 13-year-old with an iPad in under 30 minutes. Similarly, a website for a new business can be constructed within an hour for just a few dollars. The speed at which things move is mind-boggling, and it’s reshaping how we do business and live our lives.

Digital Disruption: More Than ‘Web 2.0 on Steroids’

In essence, we are experiencing a digital disruption that goes beyond ‘Web 2.0 on steroids.’ It’s a fundamental restructuring of how business operates and, indeed, how we live our lives. From childcare to aged care, from car repair to stocks and shares, every business is feeling the impact. The question of who emerges as winners and losers lies in our hands, and the solutions are waiting to be discovered.

Our conversation reinforced in my mind the importance of staying ahead of the changing tides of online business, where every twist and turn is filled with excitement.

The world is evolving rapidly, and those of us who see it for what it really is, a potentially extremely profitable and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, can take advantage of this changing world and ultimately thrive.

Unfortunately, a large portion of people will consider these rapid changes as a threat, and instead of adapting to these changes, they’ll resist and ultimately forfeit this opportunity of a lifetime.

In essence, the world is changing rapidly, and whether it’s for the better depends on your perspective. Digital disruption is not just ‘Web 2.0 on steroids’; it signifies a fundamental restructuring of how business operates and, indeed, how we live our lives.
